Neonatal Services at Frimley and Wexham Park

Neonatal services provide specialist care for babies who are born prematurely, who are unwell after birth or with antenatal concerns. Most babies will not require neonatal care, however for those babies that do, specialist care is provided at our Neonatal Units at Frimley Park Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital.

Having a baby in neonatal care can be a worrying time for parents but the neonatal teams ensure that you and your family are well looked after. It is our aim to deliver the best quality care in a safe and friendly environment for every baby that is admitted to the Neonatal unit.

Decisions about care will be made in collaboration with the families, using evidence and best practice. Parents will be involved in this decision making process and actively encouraged to participate in providing comfort and emotional support to their baby, as recommended in the BLISS Baby Charter. We are committed to providing family centred care, ensuring that the psychological needs of families are met, alongside the physical care of the babies.  The neonatal staff will ensure that all babies, family members, visitors and staffing colleagues are treated with respect, compassion and dignity.

Both our units are Local Neonatal Units (LNU) for babies born at 27 weeks gestation and above and are able to care for babies with a range of care needs and conditions. We also work with the neonatal transport teams to transfer babies to other hospitals who need care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). NICUs will care for babies who are born extremely prematurely, or require additional specialist care or surgery.

Some parents have had the opportunity to visit the Neonatal Unit before the birth of their baby, and so may have some idea of what the environment is like and what to expect in the first few days of their stay. For other parents, coming to the Neonatal Unit is unplanned and can be a very difficult and challenging time. Some families may also be coming to us having birthed in another hospital.
