Covid–19 Mental Health and Wellbeing Pupil Survey Rolled Out To Berkshire School and Colleges

The NHS and local authorities are working in partnership with researchers from the Department of Psychiatry and COVID-19 Research Unit, at the University of Oxford, to offer an exciting opportunity for schools and colleges across Berkshire to take part in a free study for pupils aged 9 to 18 years (Years 4 to 13).

The Berkshire Online Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey 2020 will measure health and happiness and the impact of COVID-19 on young people, by asking questions about life style, school life and lockdown.

The study will determine current risks to children and young people with regards to isolation, online behaviours, anxiety and patterns of seeking support during the COVID-19 crisis.

Children and young people will be asked to log in anonymously to complete an online survey either at home, or when they return to school.

Mina Fazel, Associate Professor at the University of Oxford and lead researcher on the study said, “We are very excited to launch the 2020 Online Pupil survey for Berkshire schools/colleges. It will give us a unique opportunity to understand how young people are managing during lockdown, helping us to ensure that we are as prepared as possible to support their mental health needs now and when schools formally open again.”

The survey was first conducted in May-July 2019, in Oxford when 4,000 Oxfordshire pupils in 36 schools took part. This year changes have been made to the survey so that it is relevant to the current COVID-19 challenges and it is being extended to pupils across Berkshire through local schools and colleges.

The results will present a comprehensive picture of the attitudes and behaviour change of pupils over time and give an important insight into the mental health needs of children and young people.

The anonymised results of this survey will be available by the end of July and these can be accessed directly by health, schools and local authorities. This will allow for services and resources to be tailored according to any identified needs.

Schools will have until 5th June to sign up, with pupils needing to complete the survey by 30th June.
